Both clubs are fighting at the bottom of the table, so the points matter. Spurs have drawn three and lost three of their six league games, and they are 20th with a goal difference of minus six.
Coventry have won two and lost four, which leaves them 16th, also with a goal difference of minus six. However, a win for the visitors would take them to nine points, level with Hull City and Ipswich, who have both played seven games.
A Tottenham win would lift Spurs to six points, level with Coventry and ahead of Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and Fulham. Therefore, one result could move either club several places.
Tottenham have not won in the league. They lost 3-0 at Brentford, lost 2-0 at home to Newcastle, drew 0-0 at Nottingham Forest and 0-0 at home to Everton, lost 3-2 to Aston Villa, and drew 1-1 with Manchester United on 10 October.
In total they have scored three goals and conceded nine, according to our team statistics. All three of their goals have arrived after the 75th minute, so early scoring has been a problem. On the other hand, they have kept two clean sheets.
Our Manchester United vs Tottenham match report covers the most recent of those draws in detail.
Coventry began with four straight defeats: 3-0 at Arsenal, 1-0 at home to Hull City, 1-0 at Manchester City and a heavy 5-0 home loss to Brighton. Since then they have won twice.
On 19 September they won 1-0 away at Nottingham Forest, and on 12 October they beat Newcastle 4-1 at home. They have scored five goals and conceded 11 in six matches, with two goals coming in the 46th to 60th minute window and two more after the 75th.
We covered that Newcastle result in our Coventry vs Newcastle match report, and it showed how dangerous the visitors can be when they play with confidence.
Spurs have not won at home either. In three games at their stadium they have drawn once and lost twice, scoring two goals and conceding five. Their away record is three games, two draws and one defeat, with one goal scored and four conceded.
Coventry have won once at home and once away, with each venue giving them two defeats. At home they have scored four and conceded seven, while on the road they have scored one and conceded four.
Meanwhile, neither side has found consistency, so the home advantage for Spurs may not count for much on current form.
The clubs have not met in the Premier League since 17 March 2001, when Spurs won 3-0 at White Hart Lane. A club results archive gives the same date, and Tottenham’s own preview describes this as the first league meeting between the clubs since then.
The most recent competitive meeting was a Carabao Cup third-round tie in September 2024. Coventry, then in the Championship, led before Spurs scored twice late to win 2-1 and progress. Before that, Spurs won 3-0 in the FA Cup on 5 January 2013.
This is also the first time the two clubs have met at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, according to the club preview. As a result, there is no direct record of the clubs at the ground to draw on.
Our injury feed lists several Tottenham absentees at the time of writing. Bentancur is out because of a red card, while Mudryk (ankle), Odobert (knee) and Simons (knee) are unavailable. Kulusevski (knee) and Porro (muscle) are doubtful.
Coventry are without A. Amenda (calf), J. Eccles, L. Woolfenden (knee) and H. Wright (muscle), according to the same list. However, injury news can change before kick-off, so check the clubs’ official channels for the confirmed line-ups.
Start with the opening spell. Coventry scored only one goal in the first 15 minutes this season, but they have scored twice just after half-time, so Spurs will need to stay organised after the break.
Then look at Tottenham’s late goals. Because every one of their three league goals has come after the 75th minute, a close game may favour them. In addition, both sides have failed to score in four of their six matches, so a low-scoring contest is a realistic outcome.
