Betting is for adults aged 18 and over. On South African Matchday, gambling content is information, not encouragement to bet. Treat betting as entertainment, never as a way to make money or solve money problems.
Keep it safe
- Only bet money you can afford to lose.
- Set a deposit limit and a time limit before you start, and stick to them.
- Never chase losses.
- Do not bet when you are upset, tired or drinking.
- Take regular breaks, and use the limit, time-out and self-exclusion tools at the operator.
Signs it may be a problem
- Betting more than you planned, or with money needed for bills.
- Hiding your betting from family or friends.
- Feeling anxious or irritable when you are not betting.
- Borrowing to bet, or betting to win back losses.
Where to get help
Speak to someone you trust, and consider contacting an independent support service. Useful starting points: BeGambleAware and Gambling Therapy, which offer free online support and advice. In South Africa, the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation also provides information and support. To check whether an operator is licensed in South Africa, see the provincial gambling boards and the National Gambling Board.
