This guide explains how betting bonuses in South Africa work, so you can read any offer before you sign up. We do not have partner deals with bookmakers yet, and we do not list live offers here. Instead, you get the checklist we use to judge a welcome bonus.
A betting bonus is extra value that a bookmaker gives you when you register or bet. It usually comes as a free bet, a deposit match or a boost on your odds. However, it is never free money, because every bonus comes with rules that decide when you can withdraw.
Most offers fall into a few groups. First, a welcome bonus is for new customers. Second, a free bet gives you a stake that you can use on a market. Third, a deposit match adds a percentage of your first deposit. In addition, some operators run odds boosts and accumulator offers for existing customers.
For example, if a bookmaker offers a R100 free bet, the free stake is usually not returned with your winnings. Therefore, always read how winnings are paid before you place the bet.
A wagering requirement is the amount you must bet before you can withdraw bonus winnings. For instance, a R100 bonus with a 5x requirement means you need to place R500 in bets. Consequently, a big headline number can be less useful than a smaller offer with easy terms.
Also check the minimum odds. Many offers only count bets above a certain price, so a safe low-odds bet may not qualify. Likewise, look at the time limit, because unused bonuses can expire.
Use this short checklist on any offer:
South African bookmakers usually offer welcome bonuses, free bets, odds boosts and multiple-bet bonuses. However, the terms differ by operator, and they also differ by province because each bookmaker holds a provincial licence. Moreover, a bonus for one product, such as horse racing, may not apply to soccer. Therefore, compare two or three offers side by side before you decide, and remember that you are never obliged to claim one.
They can be, but only if the terms fit how you bet. On the other hand, a bonus can push you to bet more than you planned. As a result, treat any bonus as a small extra and never as a reason to deposit more. Betting should stay within a budget you can afford to lose.
Our bookmakers directory lists the operators we cover, with logos and links to their own sites. In addition, our guide to choosing a bookmaker explains licences, payments and apps. For how we earn money from links, read our affiliate disclosure.
Set a deposit limit before you start. Meanwhile, keep a note of the terms you agreed to, and read them again before you withdraw. If betting stops being fun, take a break and read our responsible gambling page for support options.

No. Bonuses come with wagering requirements, minimum odds and time limits, so you must meet the terms before you can withdraw.
It is the amount you must bet before bonus winnings can be withdrawn, usually shown as a multiple of the bonus.
Usually not. Welcome offers are for new customers, and most bookmakers allow one per person.
Not yet. We do not have partner deals, so we explain how bonuses work and link to operators’ own sites.
