Liverpool beat ten-man and then nine-man Brentford 2-1. Full report with scorers, red cards, VAR moments, lineups and the table effect.

Brentford vs Liverpool ended 1-2 at the Gtech Community Stadium in London on Saturday, 17 October 2026. Liverpool came from a goal down against ten men, with goals from Víctor Muñoz and Alexander Isak after the break. Brentford lost two players to red cards, and the visitors are fifth in the Premier League table after the win.
Liverpool won 2-1 away to Brentford, after trailing 1-0 at half-time. The match kicked off at 16:00 SAST (15:00 in England) at the Gtech Community Stadium, and John Brooks refereed, according to our match data.
It was a round-seven game that turned on discipline. However, Liverpool still needed 70 minutes to find the winner, so the result was far from a formality. You can see the rest of the day’s scores on our live scores page.
Keane Lewis-Potter put Brentford ahead in the 44th minute, with Igor Thiago providing the assist. Liverpool then equalised through Víctor Muñoz in the 62nd minute, set up by Florian Wirtz, and Alexander Isak scored the winner in the 70th minute, set up by Bradley Barcola.
Notably, the equaliser came while Brentford were already a man down, because Yehor Yarmolyuk had been sent off in first-half stoppage time. As a result, Liverpool had the numerical advantage for the entire second half.
Brentford had two players sent off, Yarmolyuk and Vitaly Janelt. Yarmolyuk saw red at 45+8 after VAR confirmed a card upgrade at 45+5, and Janelt was sent off in the second minute of stoppage time at the end of the match.
VAR was also involved earlier. In the 41st minute a penalty involving Alexis Mac Allister was cancelled after a review, only three minutes before Brentford took the lead. Meanwhile, Brentford also collected three yellow cards, for Thiago in the 46th minute, Schade in the 60th and Janelt in the 63rd, so Janelt’s dismissal came after an earlier booking.
Liverpool made changes at the break, with Jeremie Frimpong replacing Ronald Araujo, after Dominik Szoboszlai had already been replaced by Treymaurice Nyoni in the 32nd minute. Then Frimpong himself gave way to Rio Ngumoha in the 52nd minute.
Brentford also changed at half-time, with Kevin Schade replacing Dango Ouattara and Mamadou Sangaré replacing Mathias Jensen. Later, Aaron Hickey replaced Sepp van den Berg in the 71st minute, and Mikkel Damsgaard and El Hadji Malick Diouf came on in the 77th. In addition, Isak and Muñoz both made way for Lewis Koumas and Joe Gomez in the 79th minute.
Liverpool dominated the numbers. They had 21 shots to Brentford’s 10, with five on target against two, and 60 percent of the possession. They also won nine corners to three, and their expected-goals figure was 1.54 against 0.90.
Liverpool’s goalkeeper made one save while Brentford’s made three. Therefore, the statistics fit the story: the hosts defended well for a long spell with a depleted side, but the pressure eventually told.
Brentford started in a 4-2-3-1. The eleven was C. Kelleher, M. Kayode, K. Ajer, S. van den Berg, Lewis-Potter, Y. Yarmolyuk, Janelt, D. Ouattara, M. Jensen, J. Anthony and Thiago.
Liverpool also lined up in a 4-2-3-1. Their eleven was Alisson Becker, R. Araújo, J. Jacquet, V. van Dijk, M. Kerkez, A. Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Muñoz, Wirtz, Barcola and Isak.
Brentford had not lost a league game before this one. They beat Tottenham 3-0 and Chelsea 3-0 at home, and they drew with Leeds, Sunderland, Bournemouth and Aston Villa, the last of those 2-2 on 10 October. Because of that run, the first defeat felt harsh.
Liverpool, by contrast, had drawn with Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Fulham, and won at Ipswich and Bournemouth. Then they lost 3-0 at home to Manchester City. Still, this win gives them a first league victory since that loss.
Liverpool are fifth with 12 points from seven games, after three wins, three draws and one defeat. They have scored nine goals and conceded eight, which gives a goal difference of plus one.
Brentford stay sixth with 10 points from seven games. They have two wins, four draws and one defeat, with 13 goals scored and eight conceded. Consequently, this is their first defeat of the league season, which makes the manner of it more frustrating.
Liverpool have the better recent record. In the last five league meetings, they have won three, Brentford have won one and one was drawn. Brentford’s win was 3-2 at home on 25 October 2025, and the most recent previous meeting was a 1-1 draw at Liverpool on 24 May 2026.
