Liverpool vs Manchester City finished 3-0 to the visitors at Anfield, with Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki all scoring in the second half to send City top of the Premier League table. Ryan Gravenberch’s 62nd-minute red card left Liverpool to play the last half hour with ten men, and City made the numerical advantage count in ruthless fashion.
Manchester City won 3-0 at Anfield. Erling Haaland broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, Jeremy Doku added a second in the 68th, and Rayan Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th minute. Liverpool failed to register a goal of their own in a game that stayed goalless until the second-half turning point.
The opening 45 minutes were cagey, with Ronald Araujo booked in the 8th minute and Ryan Gravenberch following him into referee Chris Kavanagh’s notebook just before half-time. The game turned on its head shortly after the hour mark. Manchester City made their first change, sending on Iliman Ndiaye, before Gravenberch was shown a second yellow card and then a straight red in the 62nd minute, reducing Liverpool to ten men. City needed only three minutes to make the extra man count, with Haaland heading in from close range for his opener. Jeremy Doku doubled the lead three minutes later, and after both sides had made further substitutions, Rayan Cherki rounded off the scoring in the 78th minute to make it 3-0. Liverpool’s afternoon ended with a stoppage-time yellow card for captain Virgil van Dijk, a fitting coda to a chastening home defeat.
Manchester City move top of the Premier League on 18 points from six matches, unbeaten with six wins from six and a goal difference of plus eleven, the division’s best return by both measures. Liverpool drop to 9th on nine points, with two wins, three draws and a defeat, their goal difference now level at zero after conceding three without reply. The gap between the two sides is nine points after six rounds, a stark reversal of last season’s title race and an early signal of how differently this campaign has started for Liverpool compared to City’s relentless opening.
Liverpool were still level when Gravenberch was sent off in the 62nd minute, and all three City goals came inside the next sixteen minutes that followed his dismissal. A second yellow card for an already-booked player is one of the more avoidable ways to lose a man, and Arne Slot’s side never recovered their shape once City’s extra attacker began to tell. It is the kind of individual moment that can swing a game between two sides who, on paper, were separated by very little in the table before kick-off.
City arrived at Anfield on the back of four straight Premier League wins, including a 5-3 thriller over Sunderland and a tight 1-0 derby win at Manchester United, and they leave with a fifth. Liverpool’s build-up had been more mixed, a goalless draw with Fulham and a 2-2 share of the points with Nottingham Forest among results either side of wins over Bournemouth and Ipswich. The head-to-head has swung City’s way in recent seasons too: this was their third straight win over Liverpool in all competitions, having also won 4-0 and 2-1 in their last two previous meetings before Saturday.
Both Arne Slot and Pep Guardiola picked a 4-2-3-1 shape, which made the contest a direct test of execution rather than system. Alisson Becker started in the Liverpool goal behind a back four of Araujo, Jacquet, van Dijk and Kerkez, with Gravenberch and Mac Allister screening in midfield before his dismissal changed the balance of the game. Gianluigi Donnarumma started for City behind Nunes, Dias, Guéhi and O’Reilly, with Enzo Fernández and Anderson providing the platform for Cherki, Ndiaye and Semenyo to support Haaland. Once City had their extra man, the visitors’ front four simply had more room to work with than Liverpool’s back line could cover.
Both sides return to Champions League action this week before their next Premier League fixtures. Liverpool will be desperate to arrest a run that has them outside the top eight, while City will want to carry the momentum of an emphatic derby-style win into their run of fixtures against the rest of the top six.
